Te Mahurehure Cultural Marae
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Designed by TOA Architects, Taumata o Kupe is a purpose designed urban cultural community hub for education and community activities, tourism experiences, exhibitions, and corporate functions. Developed by Te Mahurehure Cultural Marae as an extension to their modern Marae Conference centre located in Point Chevalier, Auckland.
The overall vision of Taumata o Kupe was to pay homage to, and acknowledge, the whakapapa of the master navigator, Kupe, and his discovery of Aotearoa. The 2-storey building has a central hall area, upper mezzanine space, timber deck and an extensive audio-visual system which offers functionality for any event. The architectural language was developed to support the priority function of the building, which is to celebrate indigenous knowledge by sharing the story of Kupe through a permanent exhibition. High quality building services have been included to ensure the facility is fit for purpose.
